Parent FAQs

What are the age/grade ranges for teams supported by SBBA?

SBBA fields teams from 3rd grade through 8th grade.

Are there multiple teams per grade?

The number of teams is determined by the number of kids that sign up per grade and, if necessary, the results of tryouts.

Do tryouts determine who makes the team?

SBBA holds tryouts for grades 6th through 8th grade to assess skills and assign kids to the appropriate teams. If numbers at a certain grade level do not warrant two teams, tryouts may be used to get a roster to a manageable level.

My son is younger than 3rd grade. Are there opportunities for him?

SBBA does not sponsor teams younger than 3rd grade. Programming may be available for younger kids through Stoughton Parks and Rec.

What is the Badger Development League (BDL)?

The BDL is a regional league of like-minded communities, including Stoughton, created to provide a positive developmental experience for youth boys basketball players.

The BDL is a competitive developmental league and is a step up from recreational leagues.

What time commitment is required?

Generally, teams will practice two nights per week. Practices are often 90 minutes and are held at facilities in Stoughton.

Each SBBA team will compete in the BDL. The BDL schedule includes six weekends per season from December – February. Teams will play two or three games at a single location on either a Saturday or a Sunday on a given weekend. The sixth and final weekend of the BDL season is a one-day post-season tournament at a single location.

In addition to and outside of the BDL schedule, each SBBA team is encouraged to play in a minimum of two tournaments. Several teams will choose to play in more than two tournaments. The tournament schedule is determined by the head coach.

My son is interested, but will have to miss some practices and/or games due to family commitments. Can he still sign up?

SBBA encourages all boys who have interest to sign up. Head coaches are responsible for setting and enforcing any team policies related to absences from practices and games.

Are there volunteer opportunities for parents?

There are always opportunities for parents to volunteer and help deliver a great youth basketball experience to our future Vikings. If interested, please email StoughtonBasketball@gmail.com

SBBA will host a BDL weekend this season. Parents will be required to volunteer and to make a donation to stock concession stands to help stages these games at multiple venues throughout Stoughton.

How much does it cost for my child to participate?

Registration fees are $225 for 3rd graders and $250 for 4th-8th graders. Registration fees cover expenses including BDL entry fees, jersey and shorts. The registration fee also covers uniforms, plus tournament entry fees for additional tournaments outside of the BDL.

Can girls sign up?

Stoughton does offer opportunities for girls ages 3rd through 8th grade. These athletes participate in the girls division of the Badger Development League. More information on Stoughton Youth Girls Basketball can be found on their Facebook page, Stoughton WI Youth Girls Basketball, or by emailing sygboard@gmail.com.

Who coaches the teams?
